WAVE ~ You have been asked for this interview because you are successful in living your life, and have done things that others might not consider customary for someone like you. What did you do?
Joan ~ I jumped out of an airplane to celebrate my 50th birthday.
WAVE ~ Had you wanted to do this for a long time, or was it impulsive?
Joan ~ I had NOT wanted to do it and I was a nervous wreck. It was a birthday gift from my son who was 23 at the time.
WAVE ~ How much preparation did it take?
Joan ~ I had one month’s notice to prepare myself mentally. The day of the jump we received brief instructions before boarding the plane.
WAVE ~ Did it cost what you expected it to cost? If not, did it cost more or less?
Joan ~ It was a gift but I think it was about $250.
WAVE ~ How old were you when you first did this?
Joan ~ It was on my birthday August 26th ~I was exactly 50.
WAVE ~ Do you plan to do it again?
Joan ~ Yes, I’d do it again but haven’t planned anything for the near future. I did fly in a stunt plan several years ago. Flying upside down gives you an unusual view of the clouds.
WAVE ~ Did doing this thing impact other areas of your life? How so?
Joan ~ I now realize that I can step into the unknown and survive. Since the jump I’ve met many new people from groups that I’ve joined. I also find I’m setting goals and reaching them. I recently broke 100 in golf ----not an adrenaline rush for most but this was on my ‘to do’ list for several years.
WAVE ~ What did you go on to do? Did you then (or do you plan to) make any personal or professional changes that improved the quality of your life?
Joan ~ There haven’t been any radical changes. I’m still in the same job and house, for example. On the other hand, I must say that I’m enjoying my fifties far more than I anticipated.
I’ve always been active but I find myself expanding both my personal and professional networks. I also joined a writing group and have been published in two national magazines.
WAVE ~ What recommendations do you have for anyone who is considering a similar sort of experience?
Joan ~ Go ahead and get out of your comfort zone! Do something out of the ordinary at least once a month. Find your interest and get involved.
